Menu at Babel restaurant

Babel's menu is driven by the seasons and what nature dictates.  With over 300 fruits, vegetables and herbs to choose from, there will always be something fresh and surprising.  Babel restaurant's kitchen, inspired by renowned South African food fundi, Maranda Engelbrecht, prepares simple yet delicious meals that come straight from the Garden or from our valley.  Maranda describes the food: 'We are not looking for different things, but simply looking at things differently'.

Babylonstoren Concept

Because we will not always know exactly which ingredients will be available on the day, we have created a menu that is ever-changing and flexible.  Guests can choose from our small standard menu or daily dishes from the blackboard.  Even though our Garden produce forms the core of what we prepare, Babel also offers delicious non-vegetarian dishes.  And to celebrate our Garden and introduce new varieties, an innovative and complimentary seasonal fruit or vegetable will be served with all meals.

Babel menu

Thanks to our Garden, we offer fruit and vegetables prepared and served together.  Guests can choose from an abundance of green, yellow and red vegetables, fruit, herbs and salad leaves.  Select a colour or a combination of two or three and they will be served raw or lightly steamed with salad dressings of the day.  The menu will also offer a selection of poultry, beef, lamb, fish and venison dishes that will be served with a choice of garden salads, potatoes of every hue, pulses and home-baked farm bread.  Reservations advised.

From the bull menu

Over and above our standard menu, the kitchen team will prepare a daily choice of delicious sandwiches, starters, and either a meat, fish, poultry or vegetarian dish and dessert of the day.

Family meals

This way of sharing food is unique to Babylonstoren.  For all pre-reserved groups of between 12 and 18 guests we offer the following concepts: A comfort food family meal that starts with a selection of our green, red and yellow salads, followed by slow-roasted leg of lamb nested in wild mountain rosemary, roasted pork belly and lightly smoked trout.  With the maincourse we also serve platters of fresh seasonal vegetables from the garden and chunky, handcut chips.  And for dessert a plated surprize selection from our a la carte menu.  Bookings one week in advance essential.

Cakes and desserts - a matter of taste

From 10:00 in the morning you can join us for a piece of cake and a lovely selection of teas or coffee.  Why not try a rosewater cupcake or a slice of the very best carrot cake with a pot of our fresh herbal Babel tea that you create yourself.

For dessert we offer surprising yet delightful combinations of flavours to create something sweet, savoury, bitter, sour or even spicy at the end of your meal!
